Dad, can you help me build a website?

A wish to learn

Sunday evening, as I packed clothing in a suitcase, my oldest son’s voice traveled upstairs bearing words that brought solace to a departing father.

“Dad, can you help me build a website?”
No coaxing or insisting on my behalf led to this earnest request. One hour and one iWeb later, my seven-year-old’s first website was published.
Tomorrow I’ll be spending the entire day with 80 people from a variety of organizations and countries, teaching these outstanding individuals what I know about building websites. Yet, as enjoyable as eight hours of instruction and group discussion will no doubt be, the hour spent on Sunday was of far greater importance in the grand scheme of things.
“The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn.” –Sir John Lubbock, The Pleasures of Life
